Experience true Costa Rican hospitality by staying with a local host family. Includes:

Enjoy a more luxurious retreat while still making a deep impact. Includes:

Private lodging in an Airbnb

What is a Brighter Community Resources humanitarian retreat?

It’s a 6-day, 5-night immersive travel experience that combines meaningful volunteer work with cultural exploration and adventure. Based in beautiful Playas del Coco, Costa Rica, our retreats give you the chance to directly support local schools, families, and the environment all while enjoying authentic Costa Rican life.

Who can join a retreat?

Everyone is welcome! Whether you’re coming alone, with friends or family, as part of a service group, church, or corporate team, we’ll ensure your experience is safe, meaningful, and unforgettable.

Do I need to speak Spanish to participate?

No Spanish is required. Our bilingual staff and translators will be with you throughout the retreat. That said, learning a few local phrases is always encouraged and appreciated by the community!

What is the culture like in Costa Rica?

Costa Ricans (Ticos) are known for being warm, welcoming, and community-oriented. “Pura Vida” (pure life) is more than a saying. It’s a way of life that celebrates joy, simplicity, and kindness.

What should I expect while traveling?

Expect a balance of service, personal growth, cultural immersion, and adventure. You’ll work hard, but you’ll also gain deep connections, beautiful memories, and a powerful sense of purpose.

Retreat Activities

What kind of service projects will I be doing?

Service projects are tailored to real community needs and may include:

Painting and light repairs in local elementary schools
Distributing donated clothing, school supplies, and food
Beach and ocean cleanups
Minor home repairs and yard work for families in need

Will I get to interact with local residents?

Yes! One of the most meaningful parts of our retreats is building relationships with local families, school staff, and community leaders. You’ll be working alongside locals and learning directly from their stories and experiences.

What are the retreat package options?

We offer two retreat tiers:

Economic Package – $870.00/person
Stay with a local host family and enjoy traditional meals, community-based excursions, and all humanitarian activities.
Premium Package – $3,000.00/person
Includes private lodging in an Airbnb, upgraded excursions (like volcano hikes and snorkeling), and all service activities.

Excursions and Free Time

Will there be time to relax and explore?

Absolutely! Each retreat includes time for cultural immersion and adventure. Sample excursions include:

Can I request specific activities or customize my experience?

Travel and Logistics

Are flights included in the price?

Flights are not included in the retreat price. You are responsible for booking and paying for your airfare separately from the retreat price.

Which airport should I fly into?

We provide airport pickup and drop off from Liberia Airport (LIR). If you choose to fly into San José Airport (SJO), you are responsible for arranging your own transportation to Playas del Coco.

Do I need a passport or visa?

Yes, a valid passport is required. U.S. and Canadian citizens do not need a visa for visits under 90 days. You must show proof of departure from Costa Rica (a return ticket).

Do I need vaccinations to enter Costa Rica?

Costa Rica generally does not require vaccinations for travelers, but we recommend consulting your doctor or current government travel health advisories.

Is Costa Rica safe for travelers?

Yes, Costa Rica is widely considered one of the safest countries in Central America. As with any international travel, use common sense, follow your guide’s instructions, and avoid risky areas at night.

Packing and Personal Needs

What should I pack?

Keep it light, practical, and ready for both service and adventure. Essentials include:

Quick-dry, breathable clothing
Swimsuit, hat, rain poncho, light sweatshirt
Closed-toed shoes (sneakers) and sandals
Sunscreen, bug spray, hygiene products
Prescription meds, phone charger, adaptor
Dry bag, sunglasses, travel towel, reusable water bottle

Can I do laundry while on the retreat?

Limited laundry access may be available depending on lodging, but plan to pack enough clothes for the full stay.

Will my dietary needs be accommodated?

Yes, if you reach out prior to your retreat about dietary accommodations. We will do our very best to coordinate for your dietary need. This includes health-based needs such as vegetarian and gluten-free meals for an additional cost.
