The Power of Being Present
November 23, 2024
The present is a gift.
It is the only space in which we have the ability to choose and take action.
We cannot change the past.
We cannot control the future.
Yet, we may try mightily, especially when we feel that something has gone wrong or that something will go wrong.
Yes, we can reframe the meaning we give to our past, and we can plan for the future. These are both helpful actions we can take here and now.
When you notice yourself dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, you might ask yourself “What do I need right now?” or “What can I do right now that will help me?” or “What is happening right now?”
We can hold compassionate space for ourselves for those moments of depression or anxiety.
We can be understanding of others who are struggling.
And we can practice enjoying the gift of the present and of being present.
One powerful way to bring more presence into our lives is through meditation.
Meditation is meant to be a practice, which means most of us feel we are not very good at it when we first try it.
That is ok and very normal.
I recommend practicing on a regular basis.
The key is to notice when your mind wanders, and bring it back to what you are focusing on in the present.
This could be your breath, a visualization, stillness, or a body scan.
I have a gift for you.

May you feel strengthened, inspired, calm, and confident as you practice this meditation.
